Bates College Bonney Science Center

Firm: Payette Associates, Inc.

Role: Architect, Construction Administration Lead

Overview
The Bonney Science Center at Bates College is a contemporary architectural expression that thoughtfully integrates with the traditional New England campus. Designed to advance science education, the building supports cutting-edge technology and interdisciplinary collaboration in bioscience research and teaching.

Campus Connection

As the first academic building located beyond the campus core and across a major street, the design establishes a strong connection to the existing campus. Its distinctive roof form reinterprets traditional gables and dormers, blending into the campus fabric while maintaining a unique presence.

The Bonney Science Center is the first part of a 2-phase project on Bates Campus. Across the street and Quad, the Dana Hall Renovation applies design and planning concepts within the confines of an existing building to modernize laboratories and teaching spaces.

Window into STEM

Strategically placed large windows create visual connections to the historic campus, while a two-story study lounge and collaborative student spaces invite engagement across the college community. A single corridor per floor fosters intimacy and interaction, while a striking central stair serves as a focal point for the building.

Interdiscplinary Community

A single corridor per floor fosters intimacy and interaction, while a striking central stair serves as a focal point for the building. Public spaces abut teaching and research spaces, forming physical and visual connections across STEM disciplines.
